With “Les volets verts”, this represents another view from the bay taken from almost the same position but at another angle. I love to paint views from a higher ground looking down. This painting is the last one in my short serie on the lovely town of St Valéry-sur-Somme.

The church in St-Valery is situated on a hill overlooking the bay. From that point there’s a lovely view of old homes and a mile away, behind them , the shimmering lights of the sea.

Further along the bay, this yellow house really caught my eye. I had to paint it.

When I decided to paint a serie of views on St-Valery-sur-Somme, this particular narrow street escaped my notice at first. But while checking out the pictures again, I was immediately drawn by the red hues. I can feel the warmth oozing from those brick stone walls. I remember vividly how warm it was, and how lucky I was to visit a place with this quality of light to it.

I am currently working on a serie of pictures I took 2 years ago while on a day trip to St-Valery-Sur-Somme, with my mother and sister. It was early July, hence the flags, and the day was beautiful. Ma seems to be carrying the sun on her back…

Sometimes I rediscover old snapshots from years past in my small camera. I came across this view of a street in St-Valery- sur-Somme. One of many that, for some reason, have not made their way on the paper… until now.

Saint-Valéry-Sur-Somme is a small town overlooking the Baie de Somme. The local authorities arranged a wooden path along the bay that spreads out to the sea. That day the sun was hot, the sky empty, the sea quiet. A perfect day for a walk before getting on the old steam engine that would lead us to the Crotoy and its large sandy beach.

After spending a morning in Saint-Valéry (France), I took the traditional steam engine of the Baie de Somme to the Crotoy. Along the way it had to stop at Noyelle for a refill. The weather was steaming hot, a true summer holiday trip.
